A greener more natural choice!

All Skeppshult manufacturing takes place locally (in Småland), providing all of the advantages of local production; for example, short transportation distances, unrestricted inspection of materials and processes and ethical working practices.

All of Skeppshult products are produced using traditional handcraft methods and with carefully inspected raw materials that contain no "chemicals". Even the seasoning process uses environmentally approved rapeseed oil from Carlshamn, resulting in an ecological "non-stick" surface that also gives the product its sleek black appearance ("KRAV" labeled). Due to being made from natural materials, Skeppshult products are easy to clean and maintain, and must not be cleaned using harmful detergents, which in turn further benefits the environment. It is because our products are made with high quality natural materials, using traditional handcrafting methods, that we are also able to provide a 25-year cast iron guarantee on all of our products. Skeppshult is Scandinavia's only foundry to manufacture household products and décor in cast iron, the "greener more natural choice"!

Environmental Efforts & Achievements

At Skeppshult we continually monitor and improve our production process in order to reduce our impact on the environment. To Skeppshult, this is an unquestionable part of modern day business. Local production, wholesome food, and a healthy environment are inextricably linked.

Concrete evidence of what Skeppshult has achieved so far:

  • wpenWe use 100% wind power.
  • 96.5 % of the sand moulds used during the casting process are re-used.
  • Our sand is locally sourced from a sandpit in Jönköping.
  • Steel - is used to achieve the optimum alloy from cast iron - 100% steel clips/recycling.
  • We only use locally manufactured FSC certified beech for our wooden handles.
  • Huge efforts have been made to manage heat waste from the manufacturing process, which has meant a reduction in fuel consumption of 76 %. (Consumption today is only 15 m3 per year in total - the aim is to achieve 0 m3 per year within two years)

Skeppshult's Environmental Audit - A Comprehensive Description

Long-distance transportation is detrimental to the environment, therefore local manufacture is always the more environmentally sound choice. Carbon dioxide gas is a major contributor towards the greenhouse effect.

Carbon dioxide is a by-product that is released during the burning of coal, oil, natural gas, and other fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide emissions cannot be removed, or purified, and are directly connected to the amount of fuel that is used.

In order to reduce our environmental impact, we have conducted an environmental audit of Skeppshult's production. The aim of the audit has been to record and monitor the results of our environmental programme, as well as to determine a base from which we will measure our continual environmental work. We have recorded our environmental impact through the levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Overview of factors affecting carbon dioxide emission level. The environmental audit has been conducted on a "worst case" scenario basis (the highest estimated emissions). In the graphical overview (to the left), the factors highlighted in green have, for the most part, been calculated according to real values and/or according to information from, for example, the Foundry Committee. The factors in yellow have been estimated according to general calculations from suppliers and public sources. The factors in red have been excluded from our analysis, due to having a negligible effect on the calculation, and in addition, being difficult to quantify. These factors are well within the targets set for the future.

Hard facts

  • Impact from each Swedish citizen*: 7.200.000 grams CO2 per year.
  • Impact from average cars. (new cars -07)* 18.100 grams CO2 / 100 km
  • Impact from 2 kg fresh chicken (not frozen)**. 3.400 grams CO2
  • Impact from a 28cm frying pan from Skeppshult: maximum 6.700 grams CO2 / life-cycle - at least 25 years = less than 300 gr CO2 per year.

You can off set the carbon foot print very easy of your Skeppshult product.

You can reduce the impact on the environment through your buying decisions. If you choose Skeppshult, you choose to support an ethical company with environmentally sound practices and natural products.

For instance, Let hot food cool down to room temperature before putting it in the fridge and save about 6.000 CO2per year***. Compare this with a large frying pan made by Skeppshult that only impacts 6.700 CO2 during 25 years.
